christmas-in-mi-feb-2009-0021Every mother dreads the possibility that it will be her child screaming the through the entire duration of a flight…a nightmare to be sure! It is a thought that has kept me awake and anxiety filled before each and every plane trip. With Ava just turning one it surprises even me that we have braved airplane travel five times now (only once with daddy’s help)… that is at least ten sleepless worried nights…yet we have always survived just fine!

With one month until our next flight east I am already wondering how Ava will handle the trip…busy, busy, busy Ava? Only time will tell. Here are just a few tips of how I survived the first year of flights with Ava.

0-6 months
I remember people at the airport telling me how brave I was to travel with a baby by myself…they were not mothers. Mothers were telling me that this would be the easiest time for travel and that it only gets harder. With an immobile infant, life on a plane was pretty easy.

My advice is to bring as little as possible through security. I carried Ava in a soft carrier, the Ergo (a wrap would also work), one blanket and my diaper bag…that is it! A carrier is a must it allows your arms to be free both in the airport and once on the plane. I cannot imagine how tired you would get trying to hold a baby for an entire flight. Check your coat, stroller, car seat and suitcase! I have been lucky and have not been charged extra for checking the stroller and car seat check your airline on their policies.

Diaper bag essentials: 6 diapers, wipes, 2 burp cloths, change of clothes (if you have a child that goes through several outfits a day perhaps two extra outfits would be wise), 1-2 small toys (Ava just loved a plastic cup from the flight attendant and the cards from the seat pocket), 2-3 pacifiers (if your baby uses them because most likely one will be lost!) and since you will not be able to read bring something to listen to while the baby hopefully sleeps. Plane travel with a baby seems much, much longer! FOOD: if you are nursing that is the easiest food to bring! My experience however has told me to come extra prepared. Ava, for whatever reason, refused to nurse on the plane!!!! I would bring one bottle ready to go for take-off, you want them eating while the plan takes off and lands to decrease ear pressure, and 1-2 cold or frozen for later. You never know if you will get stuck on the runway or at the gate. Just remember to pull any milk out of the diaper bag through security. The flight attendant will bring you hot water to heat up a bottle and Starbucks will give you free hot water if you are at the airport. If your baby is snacking bring a bag of their favorite goodies.

6-12 months
Not much has changed. I still pack as little as possible and bring the fewest items I can onto the plane. The one big change would be in the food department. Ava was weaned to formula at 7 ½ months. I would bring one formula bottle that I would mix right before entering the security line so that it would last until take-off. I mix it before because you cannot take water through security. Once through security I would get hot water from Starbucks and put it in a bottle to cool throughout the plane ride. It would be just warm enough to mix at landing. While at Starbucks I also get cold water for her sippy cup also free. I always get a treat for myself so I do not feel guilty on all the free water and tip! Your diaper bag will also need a few more snack packs, just in case!

1 year+

My next adventure with any luck will be accomplished with NO bottles!!! Ava has a thermos sippy cup which will keep her whole mild cold for hours, we LOVE it!!! I am hoping that choosing flight times that coincide with her sleep schedule will increase my chances of a sleeping baby; it has worked in the past! Ava has always surprised me, she really is a wonderful little traveler.

**Window vs. Aisle: I still cannot decide whether the aisle seat or window seat is better. The aisle seat allows for easy up and down and is most often what I have chosen. The times we have had a window seat however, Ava has been very entertained and it does seem to provide a bit more room!? Always ask at the gate if there is an aisle that has an empty seat they will move you if possible!

**Buying a seat: I know that it is recommended for safety purposes to buy a seat where your infant can be secured in their car seat. We did this once and Ava wanted nothing to do with her car seat, I held her through the entire flight anyway! Just something to think about!

**There are no changing tables on most planes so change diapers right before boarding and practice on your lap imagining a very tight bathroom space! Ava has often made it through a flight without needing a change.

Good luck and happy trails…

Ava LOVES to play on our king size bed!  This activity happens only when both Larry and I are there to guard against any potential falls and even then I am sure it is not the safest of activities.  We cannot help it though, the giggles are priceless!

Prior to this week Ava was at 8 teeth and counting…none of which gave her much pain or trouble. This week however, it was on to the molars, which has been a whole different story. Ava has been running a fever, sad and fussy for the past two days. Thank goodness for baby Tylenol, frozen Eggo waffles and frozen washcloths! The up side: she has been wonderfully cuddly and sweet when the tears take a break.

I am a regular at Costco and despite the fact that it is ALWAYS busy, I most often enjoy my visits. As time passes I am noticing that they are carrying more and more organic options at much lower prices than the grocery store; chicken, eggs, animal crackers, peanut butter just to name a few. This week I was excited about two new finds at very reasonable prices:

flax-seedOrganic Cold Milled Flax Seed– I have been buying whole flax seed which then had to be ground up right before use and immediately eaten. What a pain but great for all those omega-3’s, brain food for Ava! Now they have found a way to pre-grind it without releasing all the “good stuff” and it keeps in the cupboard for 22 months! Yah so easy to use that Ava gets her daily does regularly!

snackFreeze Dried Fruit Snacks– My friend Mariah has been feeding these to her daughter for months and at last I found them at our store! These are all natural, no sugar added dried fruit snacks, conveniently packaged in 1 serving pouches perfect for the diaper bag! They come in an assortment of apple, Asian pear, banana and strawberry.

Now Costco  just needs to start carrying organic produce and organic whole milk and I will be in heaven!

Little Miss Ava

Here is a slide show of Ava’s one year photo shoot (not all photos included). I cannot thank our talented photograher, Kim Smith, enough. Despite many tears and a very tired baby she was able to capture our little Ava in pictures we will treasure forever! More pics can be seen in my flickr account soon…

duckSo what does not cause cancer or have other possibly horrible or scary consequences? It seems like every time I read an article I discover another product that maybe unsafe. Non-toxic toys, organic food, free and clear laundry soap, natural cleaning supplies… where does it end???!!!

This week I am questioning bath products. Recently a friend posted a link on her blog to the environmental working group: safe cosmetic database, where several baby bath products were tested and found to have various levels of toxicity. Really? It is exhausting…

When Ava was born we were given some Mustela products, which I now love. The smell of her bath soap is so yummy and instantly reminds me of my little Ava. Of course, these products did not test clean, now what? I went ahead and researched all the products I currently use on Ava.  Below is where I stand on our choice of products:

pampers-wipesPampers sensitive wipes, which we use, were rated higher in toxicity than the regular unscented wipes. The unscented wipes however, seem to sting her when there is even the slightest trace of diaper rash. For now I am sticking with what works.

butt-pasteBourdeaux Butt Paste had low level concerns but it tested better than most and since we use it so sparingly I decided it is a keeper.  It also works wonders!

Eucerin Original Moisturizing Cream tested with low concerns and was highly recommended by our pediatrician.

I still LOVE my Mustela products but will be trying the California Baby line for bath wash and sunscreen. It received low toxicity scores and great reviews from parents and can be found at Babies r Us and Target.

Keep in mind that the EWG findings are currently the only research that has been done on this topic.  Most of the toxic chemicals detected are often trace amounts created by a chemical reaction in the manufacturing process, they are usually not added intentionally and there is no evidence that they do in fact have any long lasting negative consequences.  I am sure that there will be a long line of studies to follow this report.

Something to think about: Just because something occurs naturally does NOT mean it is good for our bodies. Are there studies being done on “natural” substances and their long term affects? Look at lead, a naturally occurring substance; it took years to determine its effects. Even naturally occurring ingredients can create chemical reactions that in turn have a different effect than they did isolated from one another. Finally, many children have allergic reactions to natural fragrance and ingredients. Bottom line: there is no easy answer, make decisions that you can live and feel comfortable with when it comes to your family!

Another link to check out is, Safe Mama, where I found a review of California Baby. It is also the only site I was able to find a review on Method bath products.  Beware it is absolutely pro-natural and organic you will get information on one side of the debate and often the products they recommend are more difficult to find. Still it is informative and worth checking out.

You’ve Got Mail

wondertimeFor the past year I ran to the mailbox daily, in anticipation that just maybe my new issue of Wonder time Magazine had arrived.   Those happy days are gone and replaced with a frustration that all good things do seem to come to an end.

Wonder time ended publication with its March 2009 issue. Why??? It was by far the best parenting magazine on the market. Not only was the magazine beautiful in design, it was well written, well researched and just plain fun! I looked forward to the lovely monthly quotes and the great recommendations of products and websites… it was something unique in a sea of ordinary choices. Wonder time you will be missed and not easily matched or replaced!

My favorite quote printed in Wonder time:

“Making the decision to have a child- it’s momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking outside your body” –Elizabeth Stone

Mmm…Cake!

Buttermilk Chocolate Cake

Buttermilk Chocolate Cake

My husband loves cake, pies, doughnuts pretty much anything sweet! Then again, I guess you could say that I also have a bit of a sweet tooth myself!  There is no hope for Ava! So, before my mom left to return to Michigan we had to do a repeat Ava’s delicious birthday cakes. One was an amazing buttermilk chocolate cake, found by my friend at Paperseed, the other a hummingbird cake, supplied by one of my closest friends.  Both were extremely tasty and beautiful.  For a copy of the Buttermilk Chocolate Cake recipe click here.
