About a month before Ella was born I took Ava shopping.  I wanted her to pick out a special big sister gift to give Ella when she came home.  Something to get her excited about the arrival.  Of course I knew that she would want to buy Ella a million things that were actually more for herself so I prompted her in a direction I found acceptable.  Ava LOVES her blanket!  So we went shopping for Ava to pick out one special blanket that would be just Ella’s.  She was so excited and picked out a very soft cream and pink blanket.  She talked all the time about how she was going to give it to Ella when she came out of Mommy’s tummy.  And that is just what she did!

Ella presented Ava with a gift also although I debated forever about what that gift should be.  In the end we gave her a gift that originally was from my mom but it was just so perfect from a new baby sister… Manhattan Toys Nina the Nursing Cat.  The little kittens magnetically stick to mama when they are nursing and come off just as easy for play.  So cute!!! If you are not a cat person they also have a dog version.  I just love it!  Thanks mom for sharing your wonderful find!

Another gift I have in the wings and will share with Ava soon is a baby doll Ergo carrier.  I LOVE my ergo carrier and soon Ava will be seeing Ella in it often.  Now she will be able to carry her animals or dolls just like mama!  It looks just like mine… So Fun!!!

Perfect!

Don’t you just love when you find the PERFECT gift! I am hoping my aunt had that great feeling when she found Ava the perfect book for this halloween! (of course knowing that she would be a ladybug!)

“Ladybug Girl”

We read it several times a day, so much in fact that she reads it to me! The Perfect gift indeed!

By the way this book is worth a read and purchase even if your little darling is not a ladybug!

Little Golden Books

Perhaps these golden spined books bring you back to your childhood as they do mine.  I remember dozens of these books from my Grandparents house.  I of course had my favorites and to my delight Ava discoved one back in Michigan this summer:  “Cookie Monster and the Magic Cookie Tree”. She loved it right from the start and it has remained a favorite ever since.  Good call Grammy!

Some of my other favorites are:  “The Poky Little Puppy” and “There is a Monster at the End of this Book.” If you have forgotten about these classics they are worth a second look.

“The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear”

10 times already today! Ava is obsessed with this book. After we read it we stomp around like bears and sing. So cute~ For those that are unfamilar Audrey Wood is an incredible author. Her husband is the illustrator and what pair they make. My other toddler favorites include; “Piggies”, “The Napping House”, and “Quick as a Cricket”

From the time I was a toddler I loved Winnie the Pooh. My mom often shares stories of how I would not leave a Sears without a new Pooh Bear so she’d better remember to pack one! I still love Winnie the Pooh, especially classic Pooh and the original A.A. Milne stories.

pooh-bookI have two beautiful books by A.A. Milne one of the Complete Adventures of Winnie the Pooh the other, a collection of his poems. For Ava’s first birthday she received her first classic Pooh stuffed animal and I just happened to have the most perfect board book to accompany him.

christopher-robinIt was my Aunt however, that gave Ava the most perfect Pooh toy that I cannot wait for her to enjoy; a Madame Alexander doll of Christopher Robin with small plush versions of all his childhood friends! Too cute!!!! To make this future toy even better I found two different tree houses where Christopher, Pooh and friends could continue their adventures. Ava’s own version of the Hundred Acre Woods…I cannot decide which I like better!

The cardboard treehouse from Creative Toys is, just that, creative.  The Plan Toys treehouse  is durable and would last through siblingplan-treehouses and even future grandchildren!

Don’t get me wrong, I love having access to the large bookstores.  They typically have most of what you are looking for good prices and coffee but do not forget,  they do not have everything!

The shelves are lined with Eric Carle, Goodnight Moon and other great classic titles but what about all the wonderful, beautiful books that are not there? Walk into an independent bookstore or toy store and I guarantee you will find books you did not know were in print; unique, artistic and well told stories you and your kids can appreciate!

Here are just a few board books that I have found recently in the small downtown area of Edmonds, Washington. This quaint area has both an independent bookstore Edmonds Bookshop  and an independent toy store Teri’s Toybox.

As a teacher I am ecstatic to report that Ava is LOVING her board book collection. She will sit and turn the pages quietly for 20 min. at a time, fascinated! Pretty impressive for an 11 month old! Story time has become so much fun. Ava definitely has her favorite books and often insists that she hears them more than once. She is even able to find her favorites from a pile of her library collection.

There are so many wonderful children’s picture books out there, it would be impossible to make a list of all my favorites. Many picture books however are not available in a board book format making that list slightly shorter. Here are just some of my favorites from Ava’s shelf. I would highly recommend any one of them! Enjoy and share your favorites!
