As a child I dreaded every trip to the dentist office and sadly that anxiety still exists for me to this day. I only hope that the same fate does not fall upon Ava and that quest begins with the right dentist!

The search for the right dentist began and ended with a referral to a pediatric dentist about 20 min. from our house. The waiting room bright and cheerful, a play area tucked away like a play house and adorned with a giant elephant and giraffe was a great introduction to the service we were about the receive. The flat screen TV’s of the waiting room playing Disney movies did not compare to the fact they were also located on the ceiling above each workstation WOW! And Dr. Sun was every bit the kind pediatric dentist I had hoped for. It all made me wish I could have a do-over or at least wish that they took adult patients!

Most children visit the dentist for the first time around a year unfortunately our trip was a bit preemptive due to some concerns. It seemed that enamel was missing from sections of Ava’s two front teeth…

Now one may think that the ocean of tears was, of course, flowing from the eyes of the 11 month old baby as a stranger poked around in her mouth. There were of course some tears may a bubbling brook of tears you could say. Ava took the experience very well however and was happy to be leaving with her new pick Piglet toothbrush and a sticker. The ocean…well…that would be me…

You see the missing enamel from Ava’s teeth was due to a fall a couple of months back. Devastating news and immense waves of guilt flooded me. Although an accident I harbor responsibility for the fall and knowing that the consequence was not quite as short lived as a bump on the head was hard to take. I share this because at some point as mothers we all harbor responsibility for something we wish we could take back (Sadly I feel this will not be the last time). Hours of tears followed. Now I do realize that this is a vain concern and hardly a life altering medical problem. In the moment however and I am sure in moments to come, I felt very sad and I think that is alright as long as I come back around to grateful. My happy and healthy baby is perfect even with some chips in her teeth and her smile will always fill me joy!
